Event Organiser and Outreach Person

Free Press Unlimited is currently looking for an event organiser (online and offline) and outreach person on a freelance basis, for our Syria programme.

Free Press Unlimited based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands strongly believes that all people are entitled to have access to unbiased, reliable and timely information. This enables them to assess their own living conditions, influence these and make the right decisions. Press Freedom and Freedom of Information are vital for gathering and spreading reliable, unbiased information. Media plays a crucial role in providing people free and unrestricted access to information that can help them develop and monitor the authorities. We want to make and keep objective news and information available to everyone, especially to people in countries without or with limited (press) freedom.
 

Free Press Unlimited is currently looking for an event organiser (online and offline) and outreach person.
 

Objective of the assignment

This freelance position requires excellent logistics, organisation and communications skills. It will involve organising events (online), with outreach to relevant stakeholders and visibility. The candidate will be the focal person who takes the lead (a go-getter mindset), and will be accountable for the online events and forums that will be initiated by the Syria team at Free Press Unlimited. This task oversees the set up of events from the beginning, middle, and end of events and also provides outreach, visibility and takeaways from the discussions. These events will be organised with the goal to provide a space for Syrian media professionals and civil society activists to discuss and identify priorities, needs and ways in which the Syrian file remains a priority. This position will require an output from between 4 - 8 events, and flexible timings. Candidates should be aware that workload can be high intensity during and leading up to the events, so they should be capable of dealing with such workloads.

The best candidate will be working within a running programme for Syria, titled Cohesion through Independent and Inclusive Media (CIIM), which is part of a long term strategy that started almost 10 years ago. Free Press Unlimited, and strategic partners, see greater inclusivity, accountability and trust within Syrian society as key to more sustainability and peace.
 

Responsibilities

  • Able to implement and manage a an event through the whole cycle - Before an event: Create the event planners, agendas, participants list, materials, invitations and outreach; During the event: Monitor the progress, be there as technical support, and delegate tasks to members of the team, identify the priorities and main takeaways; After the event: Follow up with participants to communicate results, ensures administration is wrapped up with the team, produce communication material and event evaluations;

  • The focal point should have familiarity with online moderation, formats and platforms;

  • Engage with target groups of Syrians (wherever they are based and in diaspora), civil society engaged with Syria, think tanks, policy makers, public opinion leaders, activists;

  • Develop communication and outreach activities for audience engagement;

  • Work within existing networks of partners and stakeholders;

  • Promote equal opportunities: full diversity of attendees (gender, age, education, background, affiliation, location etc) and cultural development in accordance with equality and diversity and peace building policy;

  • Ensures quality and donor compliance;

  • The candidate reports to a supervisor, but works in a cooperative team environment.
     

Requirements

  • Can conduct outreach in both English and Arabic;

  • Knowledge on media sector in MENA and preferably the Syrian context;

  • Experience with event management (specifically online);

  • Accurate mindset, self-critical and service driven;

  • High level of integrity and security sensitivity;

  • Proactive mentality;

  • Able to receive and give constructive feedback;

  • Affinity with journalism, media and human rights is a must.
     

We offer

A freelance contract on a day rate, starting as soon as possible (with the possibility to extend). We offer a dynamic international environment with an NGO fair fee based on MENA region standards. Free Press Unlimited uses fair selection criteria based on equal opportunities.
