Journalists in distress:
- Every five days a journalist is murdered;
- In 9 out of 10 cases the killers go unpunished;
- In 95 per cent of cases the victim is a local journalist;
- Jounalists are being silenced by intimidation, persecution and physical violence.
What needs to happen?
Lawmakers need to provide an enabling environment for journalists, so they can safely do their job. Crimes against journalists should be investigated, tried and punished, in order to break the cycle of impunity. The media sector needs to do everything within its power to protect journalists. This manifesto will be used to raise awareness amongst these groups.
