Free Press Unlimited expresses shock and disbelief at the brutal murder of Irfanul Islam, a team member of Drik Picture Gallery, one of our former partners in Bangladesh.

Irfanul was missing for a number of days before his body was found strangled in a ditch beside the road outside of Dhaka. We are appalled by this display of ruthless violence and the loss of his life.

On another occasion, Nazimuddin Samad, a young student and activist advocating for a respectful and peaceful society, was hacked to death during broad daylight in the center of Dhaka. We are extremely concerned about the growing intolerance in the country and the way free thinkers and activists promoting respect of basic human rights have been murdered. Therefore, we call on the authorities in Bangladesh to take a firm stand against such violent, unjust and inhumane acts and to take strong action.

We hope that the perpetrators of the two killings will be found and brought to justice. We also hope that the government of Bangladesh will take serious measures to end the violence and to protect the lives of its citizens.
