Schaake explains press freedom is a very important matter to her: “Press freedom, both on-line and off-line, is one of the fundamental human rights. I'm honored to be able to help encourage this as the new vice-president of the board of directors at Free Press Unlimited. It is important, even at places in the world where the threat of people who make radio or write critical about governments, is huge. Thanks to the Internet more people are able to share their opinion, but it also makes it easier for regimes to 'cope' with and arrest bloggers. The struggle for freedom of opinion has moved to the Internet.”
At the moment she is member of the European Parlement on behave of her party D66. At the Parlement, she's a member of the Commission of Foreign Affairs and the only Dutch representative in the commission Education, Culture & Media.
Leon Willems, director of Free Press Unlimited, declares to be very content with the new member. “I'm very happy. Marietje Schaake is a very eloquent and determined advocate of freedom of opinion and press freedom. She is definitely one of the leading voices of Europe.”
