Free Press Unlimited welcomes the appointment of Member of Parliament Pieter Omtzigt as the special rapporteur of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe on the assassination of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia symbolizes a worrying trend in Europe in which journalists are killed for exposing corruption and malpractices of government officials. Free Press Unlimited expresses its concern about the attempts to silence the family members of Daphne Caruana in Malta.

In a joint declaration with 17 freedom of expression organizations, Free Press Unlimited has urged the European Commission to take the lead in stepping up its efforts to protect journalists and to ensure a full and independent investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia┬┤s case.

Free Press Unlimited is encouraged by the mission of special rapporteur and wishes Pieter Omtzigt success in the joined fight to bring those responsible for the killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia to justice.
