As of this year, 13 february will officially be celebrated as World Radio Day. Both the UN and UNESCO have recognized and supported the initiative for a global radio day. Its goal in the first place is to raise international awareness of the importance of radio as a means of communication, in for instance conflict areas.

Radio should globally be recognized as a low-cost media, which effectively supplies remote communities with independent news. Moreover, it reaches vulnerable groups, such as the illiterate, disabled, women, youth and the poor. Everyday radio proves to be a hard-to-censor efficient means of communication in conflict areas, facilitating disaster relief.

Furthermore, this international day will create a global network of radio-stations, exchanging know-how and strategies. The committee initiating the World Radio Day, consists out of the following twelve international organisations.
