'Killing The Truth' podcast series - the A Safer World For The Truth project

Every week, somewhere in the world, a journalist is killed. Because their reporting uncovered a truth that someone wants hidden. Most of the murders are never solved. That their killers go free matters - to all of us. Because investigations are abandoned, power and corruption goes unchallenged – and democracy is weakened. Free Press Unlimited collaborated with openDemocracy to create 'Killing the Truth', a podcast series that explores the cases of four remarkable journalists who paid the ultimate price for their uncompromising pursuit of the truth. Available via seven different podcast platforms.

Belarus special: Journalism in times of revolution

Tune in for this special Free Press Unlimited podcast about the situation in Belarus, right after the start of protests following the questionable outcome of the presidential elections on 9 August. Reigning president Loekasjenko supposedly gained 80% of the votes, after which people all across the country have been raising their voices in protest. The violent attempts to silence them have not been successful so far. In fact, it seems that Loekasjenko’s position is getting weaker. Will the protesters hold their ground and will this be the end of the last dictatorial regime in Europe? And what is the impact on press freedom and independent journalism?

Ruth Kronenburg, director of Free Press Unlimited, discusses the extraordinary happenings in Belarus with Maryia Sadouskaya Komlach. She has been a journalist in Belarus for many years, and now works for Free Press Unlimited as a programme coordinator for the region Eurasia.
