As of January 2024, Free Press Unlimited's Totem has empowered a staggering 9500 journalists and activists since its launch in 2016, firmly establishing itself as a transformative force in the realm of digital security education. Totem's day-to-day operations are managed by Free Press Unlimited, with support from the Media Development Collective (MDC).

In a world where information is power, journalists and activists are on the frontlines, shaping narratives and driving change. However, this vital work comes with its share of challenges, including the need for digital safety and security. That's where Totem comes in.

Bridging the digital safety gap

Totem isn't your average online learning platform. It's a layer of protection for journalists and activists, offering MOOC-style (Massive Open Online Course) courses specifically designed to enhance digital safety and security. In a digital age where data breaches and cyber threats are all too common, Totem equips its users with the knowledge and tools to navigate this complex landscape safely.

One standout feature of Totem is its commitment to user privacy. Unlike many online platforms that harvest user data, Totem takes a different approach. It only collects user data if the user willingly chooses to share it. This commitment to privacy aligns perfectly with the values of journalists and activists who often work in sensitive environments where privacy is paramount.

Empowering diversity: 9500 strong and counting

Since its inception, Totem has made a significant impact, with a staggering 9500 journalists and activists from around the world registering for its courses. These individuals are not merely statistics; they are the voices that drive change, the pens that tell untold stories, and the keystrokes that amplify truth.

Totem has issued a total of 2300 certificates to participants who successfully completed its courses. These certificates represent a commitment to digital security, a dedication to the cause, and a stepping stone to a more secure online world.

Free Press Unlimited and MDC work hard to grow and evolve Totem, so it can remain a vital resource for digital safety education, making the world a safer place for all who value the power of information and the importance of safeguarding it.
