Project Management Internship – Africa focus

Would you like to bring your international development knowledge into practice? Do you want to gain hands-on experience in project management for projects in Africa? Are you curious about creative storytelling, monitoring, and learning with our partners? Free Press Unlimited offers a five-month project management internship (4 days per week) at our Amsterdam office, preferably starting in May 2026.

Who we are

Free Press Unlimited’s mission is to ensure that independent news and independent information are available and remain accessible to everyone, especially to people living in countries where (press) freedom is absent or restricted. By supporting local media professionals and journalists, Free Press Unlimited helps ensure that people have continued access to the information they need to survive and to develop. Free Press Unlimited aims to create and expand freedom of expression by promoting press freedom and media diversity.

 

About the internship

During this internship, you will gain hands-on experience in project management by supporting a range of media development projects, primarily in Africa, though some projects may take place elsewhere. We work with partners in countries such as Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya, as well as across Central and West Africa.

You will be involved in grant and partnership management, as well as the administrative aspects of project management. You will also contribute to monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEAL) processes and support communication around our projects. In addition, you will contribute to research, context analysis and storytelling.

 

What you’ll do

You will assist the Project Officers and Thematic Programme Lead “Information Integrity and Innovation” with logistics and daily project management tasks. You are also invited to contribute creatively to the storytelling and monitoring around our projects. 

 

You will learn

  • to support different stages of report writing and drafting (keeping track of reporting requirement for selected programs, contribute and finalize progress reports with the mentoring of the team, organize and save the documents etc);
  • to keep track of action points with partners (write minutes and track follow up);
  • Everything about MEAL (Monitoring Evaluation Accountability and Learning) processes, contribute to data collection for Story telling and reporting on preset indicators;
  • to contribute to research for current and upcoming programs especially in the field of information integrity and innovation (Mis- and disinformation, new technologies, risks etc) , mapping of (potential) partners;
  • to link with the communication department;
  • to integrate gender, diversity and inclusion aspects for the Africa program;
  • to contribute to logistics (helping out where needed).

 

Your profile

  • You are a Master’s or Bachelor’s student – (Research University or Applied Science University) in Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, African Studies, International Relations, Communication Science, Journalism, or other relevant studies;
  • Keen interest in media, media development, freedom of speech and freedom of press; 
  • Flexible working style, self-motivated, curious and eager to learn
  • Good oral and written communication skills, fluent in English – French is a plus
  • Strong computer skills, including spreadsheets and presentations. 
  • Experience with video editing or social media is a plus.
  • A hands-on, proactive mentality and the ability to work independently
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Free Press Unlimited;
