Today, the European Parliament debates the EU Democracy Shield, a new initiative by the European Commission to safeguard democracy within and beyond the European Union. In response, Free Press Unlimited (FPU), together with partners from Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), has published a joint statement calling for stronger and more concrete measures to protect independent media and journalists.

While welcoming the Shield’s recognition of independent media as central to democratic resilience, FPU stresses that political commitments must be translated into concrete action, adequate funding and clear timelines. Independent media should be treated as critical infrastructure and supported through durable, well-coordinated investment.

The statement highlights key priorities including journalist safety, protection against online harassment, support for media in exile, strong enforcement of the Digital Services Act and Anti-SLAPP legislation, and the establishment of a fully-fledged European Centre for Democratic Resilience with a clear mandate and budget.

FPU and its partners urge Members of the European Parliament to strengthen the Democracy Shield and ensure it effectively addresses growing threats to press freedom and democratic resilience.
