Project Officer - Safety of Journalists (temporary position)

Free Press Unlimited is currently looking for a Project Officer, Safety of Journalists (32 - 38 hours/week) to provide surge capacity to our Safety for Journalists Team. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (remote work is not possible for this position). Starting date: As soon as possible

Please note: Candidates must have a valid residence and work permit for the Netherlands to be considered.

In recent years, hostility towards the media has increased, putting journalists at greater risk while carrying out their work. Free Press Unlimited’s Safety for Journalists Team works globally to improve their safety by providing emergency and legal support through the Reporters Respond programme, and by focusing on prevention through advocacy, policy work and regional collaboration. We take a holistic approach to safety, covering physical, mental, legal and digital security, with specific attention to gender-related risks.

About the role

As a Project Officer, Safety of Journalists you will play a key role in supporting journalists at risk and contributing to impactful safety efforts, with a special focus on the Latin America Region. You will coordinate and facilitate rapid response and emergency assistance mechanisms, helping to ensure that urgent protection needs are addressed swiftly and effectively. Given the nature of emergency cases, you will be prepared to respond to time-sensitive situations that may arise outside regular office hours and require prompt coordination and decision-making.

What you’ll be doing

  • Providing urgent emergency assistance to journalists in distress, particularly from Latin America and the Caribbean, through our Reporters Respond programme;
  • Organising project-related gatherings, meetings and visits in the Netherlands and abroad, including arranging necessary logistics and facilities in coordination with the team lead;
  • Building and maintaining relationships with local partners and expanding the network (with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean);
  • Special knowledge and experience on rapid response programmes for journalists and/or human rights defenders is considered an important advantage.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a passionate and culturally sensitive Project Officer with strong organisational skills and a hands-on mentality. You are independent, confident, and able to set priorities in a dynamic environment. Given the nature of rapid response and emergency assistance work, you are willing to occasionally adapt your working hours when urgent situations arise, including limited availability outside regular office hours or on weekends.

In addition you bring

  • Ability to think and work at bachelor's level;
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in the human rights or NGO sector, preferably within international programmes;
  • Proven knowledge of journalism, media development and/or safety-related issues affecting media actors;
  • Experience working with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean;
  • Strong coordination, stakeholder management and communication skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written command of English and Spanish; Dutch, French and/or Portuguese are an asset;
  • Experience organising events and meetings, both in the Netherlands and internationally;
  • A proactive, adaptable and resilient approach, with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic international environment

What we offer

We offer you the opportunity to make a real impact by contributing to press freedom and safety for journalists. You will be part of a motivated international team working from our centrally located office in Amsterdam.

We provide

  • A nine-month contract with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding;
  • A gross monthly salary between €3,900 and €4,900, depending on experience (based on full-time employment).
  • 8% holiday allowance
  • An excellent pension scheme
  • 25 days of paid leave per year
