Free Press Unlimited’s mission is to ensure that independent news and independent information are available and remain accessible to everyone, especially to people living in countries where (press) freedom is absent or restricted. By supporting local media professionals and journalists, Free Press Unlimited helps ensure that people have continued access to the information they need to survive and to develop. Free Press Unlimited aims to create and expand freedom of expression by promoting press freedom and media diversity.
Profile of the Supervisory Board
The purpose of the Supervisory Board of Free Press Unlimited is to supervise the achievement of the organisation’s objectives at a strategic and policy level. This includes oversight of project implementation, the mission, leadership and governance (with specific attention to the Executive Director), the quality aspects of the Foundation, partner satisfaction, staff satisfaction, as well as funding and financial management.
Composition and expertise of the Supervisory Board
The Supervisory Board of Free Press Unlimited is seeking two new members: one to succeed a departing member and one new position to strengthen the Board.
We are seeking members with complementary expertise:
Profile 1: media (development) and journalism
- Academic level of work and thinking;
- Administrative and/or supervisory qualities, with experience in social organisations;
- Affinity with independent media, journalism and the foundation's mission;
- Insight into the demands that quality, efficiency and continuity place on an organisation such as Free Press Unlimited;
- Sense of social responsibility;
- A proactive and critical attitude;
- Preferably knowledge of international media developments, or broad expertise within the media landscape;
- Management experience within journalism;
- A relevant network in Dutch journalism and the willingness to use it for the benefit of the foundation.
Profile 2: political / administrative (new position)
- Academic level of work and thinking;
- Administrative and/or supervisory qualities, with experience in social organisations;
- Affinity with independent media and the foundation's mission;
- Insight into the demands that quality, efficiency and continuity place on an organisation such as Free Press Unlimited;\
- Sense of social responsibility;
- A proactive and diplomatic attitude;
- A relevant network in politics (preferably in The Hague and/or Brussels);
- Experience operating at the intersection of politics, journalism and the public interest;
- Strategic political insight and knowledge of national and international administrative forces;
- A strong sense of political relations.
What we offer
Members of the Supervisory Board are appointed for a term of five years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further five-year term. The Supervisory Board meets three to four times per year in Amsterdam. In addition, other meetings or gatherings may take place, depending on committee membership (FAC). The position is unpaid.
