Together with the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ), we are once again sending an urgent letter to caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Caspar Veldkamp. The letter is an urgent call to action to protect Palestinian journalists. Last Sunday evening, Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and five colleagues were killed in a targeted attack by the Israeli army.

“In the attack on Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues, everything indicates that this was not an accident, but a deliberate and systematic targeting of clearly marked members of the media." Says Ruth Kronenburg, Executive Director.

Israel's continuous attacks on journalists threaten to shut down access to reliable information. This is a deliberate strategy by Israel to prevent critical reporting.

The attack on Al Jazeera journalists calls for concrete measures from the international community to ensure that journalism can continue to do its work.

In our letter to outgoing Minister Veldkamp, we reiterate our urgent calls:

  • Actively advocate for the protection of journalists in Gaza and the West Bank;
  • An independent investigation into the deaths of Palestinian journalists;
  • Insist on access for international journalists to Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
