Deadly attacks on journalists are a depressing reality
In Gaza, almost 300 journalists have been killed in airstrikes since October 2023, many while covering the stories of their own communities.
In Ukraine, journalists are repeatedly targeted by drones, missiles, and artillery. Recent attacks killed reporters who were documenting the destruction of civilian areas.
In Sudan, independent reporters are being hunted, arrested, and forced to flee. Journalists have been pushed into exile as the conflict intensifies.
These are not isolated incidents. This is a global pattern of silencing the truth through violence. Journalists worldwide face physical attacks, online harassment, legal threats, and forced exile. Without journalists society loses access to independent information.
Our role
At Free Press Unlimited we fight against journalistic oppression. In order to to this, we use a holistic approach that includes the physical, psycho-social, digital and the legal domains equally. We believe that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions, as the safety challenges vary per context, and therefore the solutions differ as well. Our approach is based on these pillars: Prevention, Preparedness, Protection and Prosecution.

Preventie
We helpen journalisten zichzelf te beschermen met wetten, trainingen en veiligheidsmiddelen, en zorgen voor relocatie wanneer gevaar dreigend is.
Paraatheid
We ondersteunen de mentale gezondheid van journalisten met begeleiding, veilige ontmoetingsplekken en steunnetwerken, waaronder specifiek steun voor vrouwelijke journalisten.
Bescherming
We bieden noodhulp, juridische ondersteuning en veilige relocatie, zodat journalisten kunnen blijven werken vanuit risicogebieden.
Vervolging
We bestrijden straffeloosheid door zaken van vermoorde journalisten te heropenen en te pleiten voor juridische verantwoordelijkheid wereldwijd.
Ons doel is een veilige omgeving te creëren waarin journalisten zonder angst kunnen werken, gesteund door toegankelijke beschermingsmechanismen, verankerde veiligheidspraktijken en stevige juridische waarborgen.
The Investigation Unit
With our Investigation Unit we fight against this impunity for crimes against journalists. In this project, cold cases of murdered journalists are re-opened and investigated. Through these investigations, new facts and information around the killings are revealed, paving the way for pursuing justice.
Reporters Respond
Journalists must be able to continue to do their work. This is why Free Press Unlimited offers support to media professionals in distress with emergency assistance, legal support, and safety advice through our Reporters Respond Emergency Fund.
