Support journalists and newsrooms in Nepal
On the morning of 26 August, 2026, a series of flash floods hit parts of Nepal, destroying homes, cutting off communities and leaving thousands of people dead or missing. Local journalists are among those affected. Several newsrooms have been forced to partly or completely suspend operations, while journalists and their families themselves are suffering the consequences of the disaster.
Yet people in affected communities still need reliable information. Media play a critical role during emergencies like this, sharing information about safety measures, flight routes, food points, and access to other essential services.
Free Press Unlimited is supporting affected journalists and local newsrooms in Nepal so they can continue their work and help their communities stay informed.
Help keep journalism in the region going
We have identified seven directly affected media outlets in the affected regions Nuwakot, Dhading and Rasuwa. These include six radio stations and one weekly publication. Some newsrooms have suffered extensive damage and have had to suspend operations completely. Others are only partially operational because of power outages, internet disruptions, a lack of backup power and damaged equipment. One newsroom was completely flooded, resulting in the loss of all data and archives.
Journalists themselves are affected too. Some remain out of contact. Others have lost or damaged homes, vehicles or essential work equipment. In some cases, journalists have family members who remain unaccounted for.
