Once again, Free Press Unlimited will honour two outstanding journalists: Most Resilient Journalist and Newcomer of the Year. These awards celebrate extraordinary courage, perseverance, and fresh talent in the fight for press freedom and independent information. Registration for the 2025 edition is now open.

With the Free Press Awards, we shine a light on media professionals who keep reporting the truth, no matter the circumstances.

Do you know a journalist who deserves recognition? You can now submit your nomination!

  • Newcomer of the Year – Hans Verploeg Award: presented to a promising journalist with a maximum of four years of experience. The winner receives a media scholarship of their choice.
  • Most Resilient Journalist: awarded to a journalist who has shown exceptional bravery and perseverance under difficult circumstances. The winner receives a cash prize.

Deadline for nominations: 2 November 2025

Criteria for Nomination

Nominations are reviewed by an independent panel of international experts. Please note:

  • You cannot nominate yourself.
  • Ensure the nominee is aware of and agrees with the nomination.
  • Upload sufficient examples of their work (at least three pieces).
  • For Newcomer of the Year, nominees must have a maximum of four years’ experience as a journalist.

This award honours journalists who demonstrate remarkable strength of character and resilience while continuing to report the news against all odds.

Newcomer of the Year – Hans Verploeg Award

This category recognises young talent that brings fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to journalism, with a strong dedication to press freedom and independent reporting.
